I’m very much behind on posting posts in a timely manner to this blog, so I’ll keep this one very brief. In 2015, Fates and Furies was a finalist for the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Kirkus Prize. And President Obama famously said in an interview that it was his favorite book of 2015, so Groff has had plenty of publicity and buzz for this one.
And it’s well-deserved. I had wanted to read it since it came out, but whent I finally got around to it this summer, I saw finally what all the hype was about. It’s a remarkable sweeping story of two lives and one love affair, beautifully rendered, full of pain and joy.
Frankly—and I don’t say this lightly—it’s one of the finest novels I’ve ever read.
